Careers: Top 6 Tips for Young Job Seekers

After you leave school or college and going for your first job, the thought of your first job interview can be a daunting and scary task. But if you have studied the company and job description well and have some set answers to the expected interview questions, then you’ll feel much better. Keep one thing in mind if you don’t get your first job, it's OK. Just continue your efforts and get to the perfect one!

Here are some tips that will really help you at the time of your first job interview.

Tip 1: Be Well Prepared

Normally fresh candidates focus on standard interviews, which is not a good idea. It’s important to be ready for other kinds of interviews too. It may be standard interview, behavioral interview, group interview or role-plays. Every type of interview requires specific knowledge and skills. No need to be a master, but it’s a good idea to have basic information about each one to face the interviewer with confidence.

Tip 2: Personality

Your personality is of much importance, not only for you but for interviewer as well. Make sure you dress well and wear professional attire with matching foot wear. Don't wear jewelry, just go with a nice scent and light make up if need be! Your first impression carries more weight than your experience so focus your personality well before you leave for your first interview. It’s a psychological impression and you should try to impress the interviewer psychologically and emotionally.

Tip 3: Job Related Terminologies

Again it’s all about research and your interest in the job. Use specific terms that are related to the job from the very beginning in your conversation with the interviewer so that they know about your enthusiasm for the position. Sometimes, the interviewer may ask about certain specific terms so prepare a set of relevant terminologies to impress him/her and leave a good impression.

Tip 4: Research

This is very important tip, probably the most important. Do research about the company, its services and products, and the current trends in their industry. You should have information about day to day happenings in the market in which they operate. Remember, the CEO needs a guy asking about current stock prices rather a guy who asks how long he gets for lunch? Therefore, research is a key factor if you want the position.

Tip 5: Know Your Exact Price

In interviews you are trying to sell your services and it is important to know the exact salary range you are looking for. Being a fresh candidate, don’t demand for higher or mid-career candidate salary. A lot of other candidates are behind you who are ready to accept the same job at a lower wage. Be realistic in salary expectations according to your competencies, skills and energy. If you are asking for more than your skills warrant this usually means you are inviting your rejection, so again, be realistic.

Tip 6: Fixed Questions

Some questions are pre-screeners that must be asked during any interview. They will ask you for a little information about yourself, interest, and sports. Similarly, they will ask what can you do for us or why should we hire you? So the best idea is to prepare answers for these questions in a few concise but attractive sentences and come to definitive stop. If you are overly rambling on your being shown the door is much more likely.

Bonus Tip: The Takeaway

By following the above tips, everything in the interview room will run very smoothly and you can show your interest in the job and organization. You can show a hidden professionalism that needs extraction.  Employers want to want you!
